On the ground
I spent three works on the ground in Haiti directly after the quake and have just returned after a short break for an undetermined amount of time to work as the Director of operations for Hope for Haiti. Serving with the joint Latin American search and rescue team during the week directly following the earthquake was an awakening experience. Never before have I been exposed to a group of people who work so selflessly in such a dangerous environment. Confined space rescue puts your life into prospective quick fast and in a hurry. It’s not a task for those with claustrophobia. As rewarding as that was, having the capabilities to efficiently move supplies and to work directly with the displaced population to address their most immediate needs is an opportunity I will always be grateful for. Hope for Haiti is now phasing out of the triage phase to the long-term sustainable redevelopment process. From the bolstering of water distribution systems to the continued deployment of supply shipments, we are working to keep the recovery wheels greased.
